March 2023 Updates

CREATE Award, supported by CSU Chancellor's Office.
DECREASING EQUITY GAPS IN DEGREE COMPLETION BY EMPOWERING CSU STUDENTS, FACULTY, AND STAFF THROUGH ACTION PROJECTS INFORMED BY INTERGROUP DIALOGUE. PIs: Manpreet Dhillon Brar, Stacy Morris & Jessica Morales-Chicas. 145 Applications received - across 10 CSU campuses. 30 Participants completed - dialogue facilitation workshops. 10 action project teams - working on actions. csudialogues@gmail.com. https://enact.academic.csusb.edu/igd-training/

Intergroup Dialogue. During the Fall 2022 semester, we recruited students, staff, and faculty from 10 Southern California CSUs: Channel Islands, Dominguez Hills, Fullerton, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Northridge, Pomona, San Bernardino, San Diego, and San Marcos. After a focused random selection process that aimed to ensure representation across the campuses, we ultimately accepted 35 participants to the program. We partnered with Universal Human Rights Initiative (UHRI), a Los Angeles based non-profit organization that helped administer a virtual format of the four- stage intergroup dialogue (IGD) model. Six UHRI facilitators provided IGD facilitation across eight workshops. By the end of Fall semester, 30 participants completed 20 hours of IGD facilitation training.
Action teams are focused on the following initiatives that are the focus of the CREATE Award and the Graduation 2025 Initiative:
- Student Engagement and Well-Being
- Data-informed decision making
- Administrative Barriers
Teams are using data analysis; dialogue focus groups; advocacy and resource; to address the equity gaps in graduation rates, focusing on specific populations that are disproportionately affected.
Examples of what the action teams are working on:
- Learning of the needs for Black and Latinx students Learning of the needs for students with disabilities Connecting with students who are graduating to learn “what has worked?”
- Researching data and resources related to sense of belonging
- Providing information to faculty and staff
- Providing information to students to promote well-being and belonging
- Reflecting on what students experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity need from faculty, who are often their first point of contact at CSU
- Impacts of the carceral system on the trans community
